A pet day on the Galtees last Sunday and boy did we enjoy it. Lovely and fine, bright sunshine, dry underfoot, good company and what more can a mountaineering club want.

The early walk was led by Kaye Mullaney with Pat Holland assisting and a lovely horse shoe walk it was. Parking at the Clydagh Bridge Kaye led sixteen early walkers gently up onto the Cush and dropped into the coll under. The hard pull up the side of Galty Beg encouraged them to attain better things and the kept on to the top of Galtymore at a height of 919 metres. After a spot of lunch and a civilised conversation with some light banter with a Cork Mountaineering Club before dropping to the wall. Heading south it was nice downhill walking back to the Ice Road and the turn off for the stile. A warm down walk out through the wood to the cars finished off a lovely day on the mountains.

The noon walk started from the opposite side of the Galtees and using the Black Road to get onto Galtybeg at a height of 799 metres before climbing Galtymore and swinging to Knockduff. Anthony Doyle led his group of 32 very fit walkers on a gentle tour of the lower slopes of the southern Galtees crossing two streams and climbing a small hill before picking up the Black Road and the walk out with his two assistants playing a blinder after covering 12 kilometres with a height gain of 1098 all in a lovely Sunday afternoon.

All the walks next Sunday the 26th are in the Knockmealdown’s with Tom Dalton and Miriam Joyce leading the early walk. The noon walk is led by Joe Dwyer and this walk starts from the Scout Hall in Mount Melleray Abbey and will be heading for Knocknafallia and the rest of the walk will be disclosed on the day. Joe will be assisted by Nora Phelan and Martha Beardmore. All walks leave from Eldon’s at the start time with a pick up for the noon walk at the hall in Newcastle Village.
