Anne Anderson, a native of Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, has being appointed the first ever female ambassador to the United States, she is currently the permanent representative of Ireland to the United Nations.

Previously Anderson was Ireland’s ambassador to France. Ambassador Anderson, joined the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs in 1972 and has held posts in various parts of the world, including Washington, D.C., Geneva and Brussels.

The appointment of Ambassador Anderson was approved by Cabinet on Tuesday the 15th January which saw a major diplomatic reshuffle, with more than 20 new ambassadors appointed.
