Cllr. Siobhàn Ambrose has welcomed the announcement that this year in conjunction with Iarnrod Eireann, the Council will seek to develop a renewal plan for the Train/Bus Station in Clonmel. Dating back to 1852 the Station was originally built for the Waterford and Limerick Railway Company.
The proposed plan will be broken into two parts. The first part will look at improving facilities at the Station to make it more attractive to users such as additional parking, accessibility, circulation, additional lighting on the outside of the building and upgrading toilet facilities.
The second part of the plan will consist of the Council engaging with Iarnrod Eireann with a view to rolling out a promotional campaign to increase public awareness and in turn passenger usage.
According to Cllr. Ambrose the people of Clonmel and the surrounding areas are very fortunate to have such a wonderful asset or jewel as the Station on our door step. I fully endorse the proposals and indeed any initiative to increase the Stations usage. I view these proposals as a positive start to an engagement process between Iarnrod Eireann and the Council. Cllr. Ambrose hopes that future proposals will seek to further expand the rail service through Clonmel.
Cllr. Ambrose praised the ex service men and women who have voluntarily taken over the running of the cafe in the Station known as the Blue Beret Cafe. She also congratulated them on the wonderful refurbishment work they have undertaken since taking over the top section of the Station formally the station masters house as their meeting rooms. According to Cllr. Ambrose their imput in the overall renewal scheme of the Station has been very significant and much appreciated.
