After a miserable and wet stsrt to the day Sunday turned out not too bad that is if you ignore the high winds. Our leaders always take the prevailing weather conditions into account when leading a walk and for this reason the best laid plan has to be altered to ensure safety is a priority. Anthony Doyle assisted by Justin McCarthy improvised a low level walk in shelter and what a walk they led. Starting off from Ferryhouse the walk headed into the woods at Tichinkor and followed the prison stream to one of the water intakes for Clonmel. Upwards in the shelter of the woods the walk headed to Harney’s Road and once the road was crossed back into the woods again. Heading eastward’s again it was Ravens Rock and a spot of lunch at Harney’s Cross before following the military road and the picnic spot at the old slate quarries above Kilsheelan. Back into the woods and now heading westwards picked tracks and forest roads back to the cars. The distance covered was 21 kilometres and climbed 650 meters on a very windy afternoon and all back safe and sound.

National Pilgrim Paths Day will be hosted by Knockmealdown Active on the St Declan’s Way Route on Saturday the 4th April. Walkers assemble at Ardfinnian at 9.30am from where they will be bussed to Mount Mellery Abbey, Cappoquin, Co. Waterford to commence the walk.
