Independent TD Mattie McGrath has said that an All-Party Motion calling for the suspension of the proposed National Children’s Hospital project at St James’ in Dublin is now a distinct possibility. Deputy McGrath was speaking after he facilitated a briefing in Leinster House on behalf of the Connolly4Kids Group that was attended by over 50 members of the Oireachtas:
“There was unanimous acceptance at the briefing that the decision to locate the NCH at St James’ represented one of the most catastrophic and costly mistakes of recent years.
Both Dr. Fin Breatnach, Consultant Paediatric Oncologist, and the founder of The Jack & Jill foundation Mr Jonathan Irwin both spoke passionately and persuasively for the need to immediately suspend the NCH project.
I commend all those who turned up today from Fine Gael, Fianna Fail, AAA-PBP, Sinn Fein and the Social Democrats, as well as those Independent members and Senators, and would ask them to now exert every ounce of pressure they can on the Taoiseach and the Minister for Health to reverse the St James’ decision.
We have significant momentum at present in terms of the admission of the HSE to admit that it simply cannot afford the project.
This should, at the very least, demand an immediate halt to the reckless and extravagant overspending that is associated with this ill-fated project.
I will be making further efforts next week to bring all those members who attended today to agree on the formulation of All-Party Motion.
It is never too late to do the right thing especially when that option will certainly lead to the some of the sickest children avoiding a premature death,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
