On St Patrick’s Day, 17th March 2017, four elite Irish milers will attempt to break the 4 x 1 Mile Indoor World Record at AIT Arena, Athlone. The existing record of 16:12.81 was set by a USA team in New York on 17th February 2017.

The Irish team comprises Eoin Everard, John Travers, Sean Tobin and Paul Robinson. With an average best mile time of 3:57.30, the team has a real opportunity to establish a new mark. If successful, Ireland would be in the unique position of holding both the Indoor and Outdoor world records simultaneously, the latter having been set by the irish quartet of Eamonn Coghlan, Ray Flynn, Marcus O’Sullivan and Frank O’Mara in 1985.

The Irish team will be captained and mentored by Paul Donovan, a two-time Irish Olympian, world indoor medalist and a specialist in middle distance relay events.

A fantastic atmosphere is expected at the AIT Arena on ireland’s national day, with an indoor pyrotechnic display as athletes enter the stadium. MC for the event, which takes place between 16:00 and 17:00, is Ollie Turner of Galway Bay FM. Admission is free!
