Independent TD Mattie McGrath has called on the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O’Connor, to direct the IDA to clarify why it has decided to end the implementation of its Succeed in Ireland Scheme. Deputy McGrath was speaking as concerns are growing that the Scheme which is currently awarded to Trade Consultancy firm ConnectIreland by the IDA is to end prior to the publication of a review of the Scheme:

“ConnectIreland have achieved amazing results in the last number of years in terms of attracting foreign direct investment in to this country through a unique structure that allows it to tap into the Irish diaspora.

For the IDA to even consider ending its association with ConnectIreland smacks of an organisation that is more concerned with jealously guarding its patch than working in effective partnership with those who have proven they can create employment opportunities in counties right across the state.

I know that ConnectIreland is in the process of developing employment opportunities for County Tipperary as we speak.

It should be allowed to carry on that work and receive all the support it can from government and the IDA, instead of being threatened with the termination of its contract to operate the Succeed in Ireland initiative.

If the IDA is frightened of successful private operators like ConnectIreland then we have a serious problem on our hands. All the talents of our public and private sector initiatives need to be utilised if we are combat the trade and employment uncertainties that Brexit, for one, is creating,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
