This year the Knockmealdown Crossing will take place on April 8th next and the venue for the start/finish will be the Community Hall, Newcastle. Once again we are calling on all members to volunteer their services on the day. We need people at the check in at the community hall from 7.00am onwards. We need people on checkpoints and in the kitchen and to check in participants at the finish. We have had a great response for the last few years from members and we ask you to give of your time once again on Saturday 8th April. Without your help we could not run the Crossing. We are very proud of the way we as a club run this event, we get great feedback from participants and it’s a very enjoyable and satisfying day for everyone involved. Please let me know if you can assist on the day.
Walks last Sunday were on the Comeraghs and what a pleasant day’s walking it was Flann Real and Nuala O Connell had 19 walkers to mind and after parking in the Nire Car Park it was the long walk to the gap and some nifty contouring into the Boola’s also marked on the map as the Coum Iarthar Loughs . This unique part of the Comeragh range is difficult to access easily but a window into the heritage of the ice age in the rock formations, lakes and the physical beauty of the area. Flann led out after a spot of lunch and with a zig zag route to the high ground over the Coum’s and set the compass for Carrignagower. Dropping back to the trail to the gap it was a lovely walk out into the setting sun after excellent walking in the Comeraghs.
Walks next week are on the Knockmealdown range with the early walk led by Ken Quinlivan. The noon walk is led by Kevin O Donnell and Fiona Hegarty. Please ensure that you pack all the gear for a day on the mountains including your head torch.
