Peaks Mountaineering Club Notes 15.05.17

The Dungarvan walk back to Clonmel on Saturday the 13th was an outstanding success. The weather was bad but we had all the gear as fore warned is fore armed. All club members were tuned into the weather forecast and not withstanding we had a great crowd of club members out on the Comeragh mountains. Two busloads departed for the start from the Emigrant’s Rest and deposited their charges as planned. The long walk back covering 30 kilometres started from the Ma Ma cross just under Roche’s hill more familiar to many as where the large transmitter mast is placed  which is visible from the main road to Dungarvan from Clonmel.

There were two different groups on this walk  with the A walk led by  Niall Quinlivan and Ken Quinlivan. Their route was by the Gap, Knockanaffrin Ridge and the Long Hill. The B walk was led by Joe Quigley who took a more direct route and came down by the Lyre, The Nire Bridge and the Glenary Staira. The C walk was led by Jim O Flaherty and his group started from the Nire car park and headed straight up onto the Knockanaffrin Ridge. The wind and rain tested the gear and the body but Jim led on steadily towards the “gravel pits” and a welcome break for a spot of lunch. The route Jim took off the Ridge was a lovely dry track, kind on the legs and definitely a route to be memorised for future walks. Jim kept his crew low and rounding the Punch Bowl he picked up the track for Long Hill and with the Holy Year cross in sight the rain eased and the pace quickened.  The evening was only beginning as the tired walkers had a change and freshen up and were served a gorgeous meal by Mareid Fitzgerald  of Quimby’s and with a little gentle rehydration a perfect day on the mountains finished.

The Club says thank you the Emigrants Rest for the use of their premises, the bus driver, all our voluntary helpers and the comment was that this is a definite for next year again.

The evening walk next Wednesday 17th May starts at 18.30 from Eldon’s and we are in the Comeraghs wit Seamus Maher leading.

The walks on Sunday the 21st are on the Knockmealdowns and the 10am leader is Michael Tobin. The noon walk is led by Jim O Flaherty assisted by Rebecca Dromey.
