Clonmel World Music Proudly Presents: Clonmel Winter Music Festival at the Raheen House Hotel, Clonmel

The Eilen Jewell Band (USA) – Thursday 09th November

The Paperboys (CAN) – Wednesday 15th November

Daoiri Farrell (IRE) – Saturday 25th November

It’s that dreary time of the year, when the clocks are gone back, the weather is depressing and the evenings are short. Clonmel World Music has the perfect antidote for all this, with Clonmel’s first Winter Music Festival. They are bringing three great shows to Clonmel during the month of November, with bands from the USA, Canada, and one of Irelands best new balladeers. All the Festival shows will be held indoors in the warm comfortable surroundings of Raheen House Hotel Clonmel.

Gerry Lawless, of Clonmel World Music says “ We have always dreamed of running our own Festival, and when the opportunities came up to get these 3 great bands to come to Clonmel during the month of November, we jumped at the chance and turned it into the Clonmel Winter Music Festival. It will be an indoor Festival, spread out over a month, with a great variety of music and without any worries about rain, mud, portaloo’s, stale beer, tents or Wellingtons ! The shows are all indoors in Raheen House Hotel – the perfect combination for a Winter Music Festival ”

The first Festival show will be the Eilen Jewell 4-piece band (USA) on Thursday 09th Nov. Eilen Jewell has distinguished herself as one of the rising stars of a new generation of roots musicians. Jewell herself channels the styles of not only country greats like Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn, but also Jazz and Pop icons like Peggy Lee and Billie Holiday. She’s got a smouldering unaffected voice that has echoes of modern artists like Gillian Welsh and Shelby Lynne.

The second festival show will be The Paperboys (CAN) on Wednesday 15th Nov. This band is a firm favourite with the Clonmel audience. Their music defies classification. It is Mexican Son Jarocho mixed in with Irish Jigs and Reels and a good dose of Country and Bluegrass. It has healthy servings of Ska and African Highlife. It also has strains of Soul, Pop and Funk. It is mostly Acoustic although they also like Electric guitars. It is World Roots Music. It’s POP music. It is GOOD music.

Daoiri Farrell (IRE) will close the Festival on Saturday 25th November. He is one of most important singers to come out of Ireland in recent years, and this year Daoirí won two BBC Folk Awards: the Horizon Award for best newcomer and Best Traditional Track Award for Van Diemen’s Land from the new album True Born Irishman. Froots magazine said of him: “The creamy forthrightness of Paul Brady, the occasional guile and nuance of Andy Irvine and the attitude and approach to material of Christy Moore…an exceptionally good singer and a great bunch of songs “

Clonmel World Music would like to acknowledge Clonmel Credit Union for sponsorship towards Festival costs.

Tickets for all the festival shows will be on sale in Marians Bookshop. O’Connell St.  Clonmel , in the South Tipperary Arts Centre, Nelson Street Clonmel, or from Gerry Lawless on 086 3389619.
