3 Clonmel Boxers competed at the National Schoolboys Championships held in the National Stadium, Dublin last week. Conor o’ Donovan won his quarter final in style against Criostoir Browne, Oliver Plunkett Belfast, taking a 4 – 1 decision. He faced Jason Nevin, Olympic Mullingar in the semi final and after 3 action packed rounds where Conor showed flashes a brilliance to push last years Irish champion all the way, only to lose out by the narrowest of margins on a split decision. Conor won an excellent Munster final against E. Walsh, Togher in the Munster championship in March.

John Paul Reilly competed in his first national championships against Martin Barrett, Olympic Galway in the semi final. After 3 close rounds were John Paul produced some great boxing the decision went the way of the Galway boxer. John Paul won his first Munster title against John Mc Donagh, Rathkeale last month. Michael o’ Driscoll put up a brave display against the very experienced Auzelis Deimantas, Ballaghaderreen, only to lose out to the Roscommon boxer. Other Clonmel boxers who competed in last months Munster championships were Raymond Joyce who lost out to M. Faulkner, Northside and Philp Radzikowski who lost out to D.o’ Brien, Fr. Horgans.

Jerome Lonergan Gartland lost out in his bid to claim another Irish title when he found himself on the wrong side of a 3 – 2 split decision against Keelan Roche, St. Aidans Wexford in the final of the Junior 1 national championships. Jerome looked to be the busier boxer over the 3 rounds, landing some quality shots but the decision went the Wexford man’s way. Jerome won his semi final by unanimous decision against Patrick McCarthy, Tralee and he won an excellent Munster title against Jamie Lee, Legacy Cork. The season is far from over for these Clonmel boxers as they prepare for the upcoming Junior and Senior national cadet championships to be held in Dublin.
