Minister and Department need to introduce a cull on the wild Deer population – Mattie McGrath

Independent Tipperary TD, Mattie McGrath is calling on the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed TD to introduce a cull on the wild deer numbers in certain parts of rural Tipperary.

Deputy McGrath’s call comes for the control of deer numbers, because of collisions with motorists, damage to farmland, gardens and planted woodland.

Calling on the Minister to introduce a cull Deputy McGrath said, “Farmers are continually informing me that they are wreaking havoc in many areas, destroying woodland, crops, even gardens and also causing a danger to motorists on the roads.

Deer are grazing in cattle and sheep pastures bordering woodlands, sharing hay and silage with cattle and sheep, damaging boundaries and in general causing much distress to the farming community. This is following on from what was an exceptionally dry spring and summer this year putting further pressure on farmers after the subsequent fodder crisis that was caused and is continuing in many cases. In many instances when crossing rural and national roads, they can be a significant danger to motorists and cyclists, particularly in the evening and night time.

While my call to cull might be distasteful to some, the livelihood of farmers is at stake with many land owners feeling the population of wild deer has risen to an all time. We need to be culling much higher numbers – either by hunters or conservation officers and I would also call on the IFA to get involved and where necessary the National Parks and Wildlife Service.”

Concluding Deputy McGrath said, “The current number of deer herds simply aren’t been culled enough. I add that I would not or ever want to eliminate any herd of wildlife in the County or indeed Ireland, just to humanely cull a herd and find a solution that will leave farmers and wild life activists satisfied.”
