“Taoiseach dodging accountability on knowledge of cost escalation timeline” Mattie McGrath

by admin on 19/02/2019

Independent TD Mattie McGrath has called on the Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, to clarify why he has refused to answer a Parliamentary Question that requested the timeline of events for when he was made aware of escalating costs at the National Children’s Hospital (NCH). Deputy McGrath was speaking ahead of Leaders Questions where he is set to challenge the Taoiseach on a number of matters related to the project:

“The Taoiseach is fond of telling us that his government is committed to full transparency and openness around the ongoing crisis that is afflicting the development of the NCH at St James.

What he did not tell us is that apparently this applies to everyone except him.

I asked him a very straightforward PQ around when he became aware that significant cost problems were emerging beyond those agreed by government when it signed off on the NCH contract in 2017.

Unfortunately the Taoiseach has now decided to arrogantly ignore that request and transfer the Question to the Minister for Health instead.

If I wanted to place that PQ to Minister Harris; I could have done so along with the dozen other Questions I have already submitted to him.

It is clear from the Taoiseach’s refusal to answer this simple Question that he is more concerned with keeping the focus for any responsibility related to the NCH squarely targeted at the back of his beleaguered Minister for Health and away from himself.

This is accountability, Fine Gael style; all spin and no substance,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
