Mary Newman Julian Fine Gael candidate welcomes the confirmation from Minister Simon Harris yesterday (Friday March 1st) that the letter of approval for the next phase of the development of the second Cath Lab at University Hospital Waterford.

Approval has been granted to appoint the design team and progress the design of this project in 2019.

Newman Julian added ‘I am delighted to hear that work will commence shortly to progress the development of a second Cath Lab in University Hospital Waterford and have met with Minister Harris on numerous occasions in relation to this project.’

There has been an on-going campaign to secure 24/7 cath lab services in University Hospital Waterford. The hospital is currently a designated cardiac centre but currently only has one cath lab that is open 5 days a week, 8.30 – 5pm.

Minister Harris has previously confirmed that funding was provided in 2017, 2018 and also for 2019 to extend the opening hours of the cath lab. However, this did not occur, due to recruitment issues.

There is currently a National Cardiac Review underway, which will review the density, distribution and need of cardiac services across the country. The outcome of this review will indicate the need or otherwise for the provision of 24/7 cath lab services in Waterford and elsewhere in the country.

A second cath lab is essential for the provision of 24/7 services, as a backup lab is required to ensure continuity and availability of care.

The progress on the second cath lab in 2019 will ensure that if the outcome of the National Cardiac review is to recommend 24/7 cath lab services, then University Hospital Waterford will be in a position to provide the service when required.
