“Emergency legislation must be subject to a sunset clause” Mattie McGrath

Independent TD Mattie McGrath has said he supports calls that have been made for the introduction of a sunset clause for the Health Preservation and Protection and other Emergency Measures in the Public Interest Bill 2020. Deputy McGrath was speaking after The Irish Council for Civil Liberties said yesterday that it is imperative that any emergency legislation introduced to curb the spread of COVID-19 should be time-limited:

“I share the view put forward by the ICCL that this legislation, while important, must also include a sunset clause.

It has been made clear by the ICCL and others that while we are in unprecedented times; we must act within the Constitution to ensure that any restrictions of rights are proportionate and only as invasive as is necessary to protect public health.

While we will be able to review the legislation in the Dáil, it is important that people know that the wide ranging powers which have been granted are for a limited time period and only until this current crisis passes,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
