I have a very interesting videotape of about twenty minutes which was aired on RTE quite some years ago and it shows quite a bit of O’Connell Street, Gladstone Street and other parts of Clonmel. There are some interviews with townspeople who are long gone, in particular with regard to the West Gate. It might be a good idea to transfer the tape to DVD while it is still possible. I do not think anyone else has a copy of the tape. If there is anybody out there interested, please get in toucht with me (I am in the phone book) and we can see if anything can be done. I do not have any facilities to copy same to DVD.
Redmond. That Crest was, at the time of demolition of the Ormonde Hotel, supposed to be in safe keeping by someone or other but I can’t for the life of me remember who it was!. It might be in the Museum’s Advice Committee’s notes from a meeting at the time of the demolition I’ll check it out as I was on the Committee then and am still on it!. I have the page from one of the newspapers( Nationalist?) on the day it was pulled down and there are photos of it also……. Goin going GONE! was the heading. Must look it up sometime when I have time!!!I’d love to see that Coat-of-Arms again. I think there was a boat in it? ?Maureen
The Ormonde Hotel was originally the Cork Savings Bank and the coat-of-arms of the city of Cork was above the entrance.On demolition, the coat-of-arms was taken down and a planning condition of the new building was that the coat-of-arms be returned to its original place. The planning condition was never carried out. I had a photo of the coat-of-arms being taken down, but cannot find it.
Wonderful to see all the old pics. What a shame these wonderful shop fronts are no more. The Ormond Hotel in particular, what a shame this wonderful building wasnt preserved. Keep the pictures coming, they are brilliant!!!

Absolutely love all the old pics of Clonmel, what a great idea! I’ve just spoken to my sister Anita in Clonmel. As I sit here with a cup of tea and the newspaper, looking out at a completely white world. A very Canadian winter’s view! Now I’m transported back to Clonmel and the old Fair Days, when I was a child.
