It is the original Ulster bank site .(60s to 2009)it is now oreillys hair stylists.the lane way to the left was called whites lane.which was a public way in those days

can anyone provide tell me what happened to Prendergast Motors (Ford Auto Dealer ??) which I believe was located
in Clonmel during the 1980’s. Any suggestions as to where I may be able to obtain more information would be appreciated.

No 70 was taken over in 1920 by the “Clonmel Co-op Stores Ltd” (Model Machine Bakery was included on their logo) and were large bakery. They had a fleet of vans that delivered the bread around the town. It was wound up in the early 1970’s. The horse drawn Bread Van in the photo (has to be pre 1920) survived in their garage in William Street and when my father took over the old garage (about 1972ish) it was full of old 1950’s ford vans that were scrapped but he gave the Bread Van to a local man and it was used on some of the Parades in the town drawn by a horse. I bet it may still survive. Memories of buying loose biscuits from the glass lid Jacobs tins by the pound weight.

Yes you’re right Tom , it was the Co. Op. shop which had a bakery. My mother Violet worked there as a girl!

The lane attached to the shop seems to lead down Hopkins Lane, but the Ulster Bank was on the left of the lane, above Majors,which was originally Jack Dougan the druggist. To the right of the lane lived Wally and Addie Waldron who ran a grocery and bar business. I am open to correction. All of the shops are gone, but the windows layout and facade overhead are mostly the same and can be a good guideline.

Was it the Co-Op which was also a bakery in the 50’s and 60’s. Jack Bourke’s Fishshop was on the left and Liptons was on the right.
