75 O’Connell St: P. Lambe & Sons LTD – Paddy Lambe was my father. He had that shop from before I can remember (the early 60s until approx 1982). I never remember the front looking like that – they must have had to take off the decorative brickwork around the windows (the front of the building was always an issue) and also changed the shop-front to a central doorway with windows on either side. Ah, good times. Now it is subsumed into Allen’s as Mr. Burke said. Funny that as my mother always wanted my Dad to buy the next-door premises and expand our shop into it, but he had shallow ambitions and loved his days off playing golf.

In my time in O’Connell Street it was Tangney’s and then passed on to Paddy Lambe who ran a drapers shop for a long number of years. I can remember a lad named Culligan, from town, working behind the counter. I think he later emigrated. It was amalgamated with Allen’s, which had been the Clonmel Drapery.
