Mick, you are correct about the letters CRC over the old lane way to the Island. I remember my late father, John, who was the Club President and his friends Paddy Hyland and Jimmy Cantwell bringing the letters to the Island and Jimmy cutting Letter O’s and changing them to C’s and erecting them at the top of the Laneway. Noticed recently that they are starting to rust.
Part of the Ormonde Hotel still exists in Clonmel. The old entrance to the Clonmel Rowing Club has C R C over it. These letters came from the letters over the hotel – the C was cut from the O (two of them) and the R was the R.
Pure shame to see one of the towns old and well known landmarks at the time gone, I remember well as a young teenager the building been knocked down on my way back to school and remember the builders taking great care in removing the hotels coat of arms that were above the hotels entrance, as far as I can think back the year was 1976/77, Five Star supermarkets were the developers, again a pure shame they could not have saved the front of this building.
The church spire you see in the background, Mary, is in fact the old spire of Ss Peter & Paul’s church, the present tower we see today was built in 1934/35 when Dean Byrne was parish priest.
Is that not St Mary’s church, Irishtown in the background?
