I think the first modern “supermarket” in Clonmel was Five Star. It opened mid 60’s at 12 O’Connell St to the left of Tierney’s pub.
First shop to have baskets, check-outs and self-service.
Everyone reckoned back then that self-service shops would never catch on!
This photo certainly brings back very happy memories of me as a young mother with pram buying my messages there & bringing them home in the big basket that Sean Weston’s Dad made for me which hung at the end of the pram with leather straps! I also bought my daughter’s 1st Holy Communion Dress upstairs in Winstons and it was quite cheap as it was a bigger size than normally worn by a 7 year old and they were selling at half price as it was the only one left! It was a beautiful broderie anglese dress which got great use as a party and summer dres, washed like a hankie and was handed down to cousins later. We furnished the house with green shield stamps also. Vincent Walsh from Carlow was the Manager and he married my friend, the late Marie Arrigan, Ard na Greine, Clonmel a few years after he came to Clonmel.
Remember it well used to shop there with my mam, winston’s was upstairs and besco’s was down stairs, used to collect the green shield stamps there, and we had a make a trip to waterford to cash them in, What a blast from the past!!!!!!!!!
Who can remember shopping there
Winston’s and Bescos was located on O’Connell St., where Lifestyle Sports is now.

Well done Declan, you are right, its a long time ago now.
It was where lifestyle sports is now. Possibly the first supermarket in Clonmel.
