Redmond was it your mother had a coffee shop? I would regard it as the first cafe selling coffee served with loads of whiped cream, in mugs. Both items being very modern on a par with ladies who lunch today.it was the place to go after work (mid afternoon)
O’Connell street can be confirmed by looking at photo 039
Showed the photo to my father and he said it was O Connell Street as well
Everybody wrong! Declan Walsh was the jeweller and it was 10 O’Connell Street. On the West Gate side was Tyler’s shoe shop and below it was Rollos (Jack Ryan), Plumbers. Before my family moved to 14 O’Connell Street we lived there in the 1940s until about 1950. The owner was Johnny Holland who had a travel agency in Mitchel Street. After Declan Walsh it was Malone Insurances. There was a magnificent shop front as can be seen from the photo. It was a shame to see it go, but plastic fronts was progress then! It is being mixed up with Cantwell’s jewellers in Parnell Street, which also had a fantastic front, only to be demolished by the Corpo!
I worked across the road from that shop in the early 60s. Anybody remember Sloans,a shilling down and a shilling a week
Cantwells jewellers fabulous old wooden shutters ,and yet another beautiful shopfronts gone
You are right Richie, my uncle used to put up the security shutters on that jewellery shop when an old lady owned it years after the picture above was taken.
But I could be wrong
