Tipperary County Museum will be celebrating International Womens Day with its exhibition launch of ‘Women of the Rising – Rising of the Women’ – A commemorative project by Theresia Guschlbauer Artist in collaboration with 62 local women & Tipperary photographer John D. Kelly
The exhibition documents the original commemorative project, which took place in July 2016 which comprised of a workshop, re-enactment and included a series of presentations & performances by participating women. Each participant was invited to pick one of 62 women from an original 1916 photograph (or a contemporary activist) and to impersonate her as part of the re-enactment event. The aim was to commemorate the Women of the Rising – the ‘boldest and most unmanageable revolutionaries’ as coined by Eamon de Valera. Many of the women were until recently ‘airbrushed’ out of history. Theresia Guschlbauer, the artist who devised the project, is delighted the project will be seen by the general public, as she is fascinated by the indomitable spirit of those women. Many of whom went on to become major social innovators and social justice advocates. The exhibition celebrates the enduring power and contribution of Irish women since 1916 and throughout the world today.
