The Mayor of Clonmel Cllr. Pat English launched a very welcome addition to the social and community life in Clonmel in Gleeson’s Bar Irishtown on Sunday evening last. The Clonmel table quiz league will run over 10 nights in 10 different hostelries in the town between the end of November and the end of March. The prize fund in the league is of the order of winners € 1000 and runners up € 500. Each individual night there will also be winner and runner up prizes making it a very attractive community event. All clubs, organisations, and local business are invited to to enter a team. Groups and individuals can also enter and are encouraged to do so.The quiz is being organised by Cumann Tobar Naomh Padraig who in recent years have organised the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Clonmel as well as looking after the care and maintenance of St Patrick’s well. Half of all the proceeds raised on the quiz will go towards the parade and well maintenance fund.
The Mayor Cllr Pat English said that he was delighted to launch the quiz league and he further stated that great progress had been made in recent years in improving the St Patrick’s Day Parade by the organisers and the Clonmel Borough Council. He hoped that the proceeds of the event will ensure that this progress will continue in 2014 and beyond He thanked the Vintners Association for putting their shoulder to the wheel and he hoped that the business community and voluntary organisations would support this worthy initiative. St Patrick’s Well is a wonderful amenity and one of the special places retuning emigrants visit. The society is to be commended for the manner in which it is maintained and the care its members give freely to its upkeep.
Mr Richie Gleeson Chairman of the Clonmel and District Vintners Association said that the publicans too were delighted to be part of this event. The Parade and the Well are integrated parts of the fabric of Clonmel and deserve the full support of all its inhabitants. Events like this are fun, social occasions and bring people together in common cause.. He hoped that this quiz league would be an outstanding success and that the participants would see the proceeds of their efforts in the Clonmel 2014 parade.
Mr P J Long of Cumann Tobar Naomh Padraig said that in recent years the parade had been supported solely by the Clonmel Borough Council and Cumann Tobar Naomh Padraig. If it is to continue to grow and prosper a broader base of support had to be achieved. In this regard he thanked the publicans of Clonmel for coming on board with this initiative. Letters of invitation to participate in the quiz will be sent to all business and voluntary groups asking for their support with the first quiz which is scheduled for the end of November. The entry fee for the entire league is €150 per team and individuals can also enter a team on the night for €20 .
