Clonmel World Music Proudly Presents: Special Consensus (Chicago, USA)

Clonmel World Music is celebrating 10 years of bring great bands to play in Clonmel in 2019 and, for the first show of 2019 at Raheen House Hotel on Friday 18th January, they are delighted to host a fantastic Bluegrass Band from Chicago USA on their third visit to Clonmel.

Special Consensus will be over on their biennial tour of Ireland, having have just been nominated for a GRAMMY for their latest album, Rivers and Roads, in The Best Bluegrass Album category. They also recently won two awards at the International Bluegrass Music Awards. The Special Consensus 2019 tour will be the band’s 43rd year of touring! 

Formed in the Chicago area in 1975, Special Consensus is a four-person acoustic bluegrass band with a repertoire that features traditional bluegrass standards, original compositions by band members and professional songwriters, and songs from other musical genres performed in the bluegrass format. They have released 19 albums and have appeared on numerous NPR programmes in the USA and cable television shows, including The Nashville Network and the Grand Ole Opry at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee.

The band is led by its co-founder GREG CAHILL, who plays banjo and sings baritone and tenor harmony vocals. Greg Cahill is the former President/Board Chair of the Nashville-based International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Special Consensus was founded by Greg as a showcase for his urban traditionalist take on bluegrass which encompasses elements of Chicago blues, swing, newgrass, and country music

The other band members are – RICK FARIS who plays guitar and sings lead, baritone, tenor and high baritone vocals. Rick is well known in the world of bluegrass music as an award-winning guitar player. DAN EUBANKS plays bass and sings lead, baritone and bass vocals. The bands fourth member is NICK DUMAS, who plays mandolin and sings lead, baritone and tenor.

 International tours have brought the band to Australia, Canada, Europe, South America, Ireland and the United Kingdom. Special C has appeared in concert with many symphony orchestras nationwide and has brought an informative in-school presentation to US schools nationally and internationally since 1984. Band leader/banjo player Greg Cahill is the former President/Board Chair of the Nashville-based International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA), the former Board Chair of the Nashville-based Foundation for Bluegrass Music and a recipient of the prestigious IBMA Distinguished Achievement Award (in 2011). 

The 2012 Compass Records band release Scratch Gravel Road was GRAMMY nominated for Best Bluegrass Album and two songs from the 2014 Compass Records band release Country Boy: A Bluegrass Tribute To John Denver received IBMA awards for Recorded Event of the Year and Instrumental Recorded Performance of the Year. The 2016 Compass Records band recording Long I Ride received the IBMA Instrumental Recorded Performance of the Year award.

The 2018 Compass Records band release Rivers and Roads garnered two more IBMA awards for Instrumental Recorded Performance of the Year and Album of the Year. Rivers and Roads remains at #1 on Bluegrass Unlimited “Top 15 Bluegrass Albums” chart in January! It has been on the chart for 7 months and #1 for 5 consecutive months. The singles from the album She Took the Tennessee River moved up to #2 and Way Down the River Road is #7 on the Songs chart.
