General Information
O’Connell Street, formerly Main Street, has been the centre of Clonmel since the town’s foundation.
As Clonmel was a garrison town, and a thriving market town for a large hinterland, the businesses located there provided the wide range of goods demanded by the population.
Wine importers, Straw Bonnet Makers, Milliners, Tanners, Haberdashers – Clonmel had them all, and much more.

In present day Clonmel, O’Connell Street numbers range from 1 to 86. The entries on the relevant page are taken from Slaters Directory, 1846, and show shop numbers running from 1 to 115. Seemingly, in the intervening years, several adjacent shops have been merged together, with the numbering scheme altered accordingly, thus accounting for the reduced total today.
I have shown the 1846 entries of shop owners, from numbers 1 to 86, as occupants of the present-day shops numbered 1- 86, although they may not have been in the same premises then as the same shop number today. This page is an extra, showing the occupants of numbers 87 to 115.
1-26 O’Connell Street
This part of the street begins on the south side of the street, close to the Main Guard. It runs westwards, and reaches as far as Bridge Street.
27-44 O’Connell Street
This part of the street begins on the south side of the street, at the Bridge Street junction. It continues as far as the West Gate.
44A-59 O’Connell Street
This part of the street begins on the north side of the street, at the West Gate, then continues as far as Mary Street.
60-86 O’Connell Street
This part of the street begins on the north side of the street, at the Mary Street junction, then continues as far as the Main Guard.
87-114 O’Connell Street??
